What will the project do?

  • Plan drawingRestore and renovate the building.  The project will address a number of structural issues with the building; restore details such as the windows and repair and redecorate the interior of the building. The Newbery paintings will also be given a bit of tlc by a qualified conservator to preserve them for the future.
  • Create a new entrance to the building from Bucky Doo square – bringing the Town Hall into the heart of the town.
  • Enable the building to be open to the public six days a week.
  • Install a new lift – enabling universal access to the Council Chamber for the first time in the building’s history.  This will also ease the transportation of ‘stuff’ needed for functions, markets and other activities on the first floor.
  • Upgrade the facilities including:
    • new kitchen facilities
    • new heating system
    • new lighting system
    • improving acoustics of the Council Chamber
    • new accessible toilets
    • baby changing facilities
    • improving environmental impact of building
  • Research the history of the building and develop new information and interpretation for visitors including:
    • Audio guides giving historical information and sharing stories and memories of the building
    • Information panels and historical photographs
    • Schools packs linking into the National Curriculum
    • Artist led projects with the local community
  • Provide new community exhibition and display space at ground floor level
  • Establish the Tourist Information Centre on the ground floor of the building, bringing it into the very centre of the town, welcoming residents and visitors to the building and local area.
